Bruce W. Fowler
Bruce W. Fowler received his tertiary education at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa (B. S. Ch (American Chemical Society curriculum) with secondary majors in physics and mathematics,) the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (M. S., physics), the University of Alabama Huntsville (Ph. D., physics) and the U. S. Army War College (Military Education Level One , MEL-1.)
Dr. Fowler's working career includes two years as a system's analyst at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, validating and improving antimissile performance models and algorithms, followed by thirty-two years as a physicist and general engineer, supervisor and manager, in a succession of research and development positions of increasing responsibility and authority at the U. S. Army Missile Command (and its successors) up until retirement from the civil service. Since then he has devoted himself to selected consulting projects research, and writing. Non-supervisory positions ranged from entry as physicist for high energy laser system concepts to chief research and development systems planner through Close Combat Heavy Mission Area Coordinator. Supervisory positions progressed through: Combined Arms Team Leader; Technical and Deputy Director, Advanced Systems Concepts Office; and Chief Scientist and Chief Information Officer, first of the Advanced Systems Directorate and then of the Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center. Dr. Fowler was a certified acquisition official who served in numerous aspects of that domain, and served as Deputy Activity Career Program Manager for Scientists and Engineers at Redstone Arsenal.
In addition, he has held transitory positions of various types, including: adjunct associate professor of physics, University of Alabama in Huntsville; adjunct lecturer in combat systems modeling, Georgia Institute of Technology; guest lecturer in research and development, and combat modeling; U. S. Army Military Academy; member of the board of directors of the Redstone Scientific Information Center; member of the Alabama Library Council; associate editor of the journal Military Operations Research, and President of the Military Applications Society. His professional memberships include the Military Applications Society, the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, the Association of the United States Army, and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. He has twice been selected as a Huntsville Association of Technical Societies' Professional of the Year, recipient of the Moving Spirit Award of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and numerous United States government awards and medals, He is an inducted member of both Sigma Pi Sigma and Pi Mu Epsilon honor societies, and is a fellow of both the Murphy Institute and the Institute of Malt Scotch Whisky.
Dr. Fowler's research, modeling, and analysis interests come under the broad heading of dissipative systems, ranging from the dynamics and application of management and organizations through systems analysis, information, and physics. He is the author of over a hundred refereed, invited, conference, and report papers and presentations, including two books: The Physics of War, and The Metaphysics of War.
Bruce Fowler is blessed with a wife, Carol, who has infinite patience and practicality, and a daughter Teri.
